Description

Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston tells the story of Janie Crawford, an African American woman navigating life in the early 20th century as she begins a quest for self-discovery. Framed as a flashback, we hear Janie's tale unfold as she shares it with her friend Pheoby. Her journey begins in childhood, under the care of her grandmother, Nanny, who pushes Janien into an arranged marriage with Logan Killicks for the sake of security. But Janie feels something is missing. Later, she marries Joe Starks, a man of influence who rises to become the mayor of Eatonville, yet he suppresses her voice and independence. Following Joe's death, Janie finds herself feeling liberated, but she still longs for a deep connection rooted in love and equality. In her third marriage to Tea Cake Woods, a warm, playful, and encouraging man, Janie finally experiences the love and freedom she'd been searching for. They share a life in the Everglades, where their relationship blossoms. Sadly, their joy is cut short when Tea Cake contracts rabies during a fierce hurricane. In a heartbreaking moment of self-defense, Janie is forced to take his life. Afterward, she returns to Eatonville, feeling at peace with her experiences and the love she had for Tea Cake. Hurston's novel digs into important themes of love, identity, and independence, displaying the importance of realizing oneself and the resilience of the human spirit, especially when facing societal and personal obstacles.
